One-year-old ‘pregnant’ with twins

A one-year-old girl has survived surgery to remove her unborn twin’s foetus from her swollen stomach.

Kang Mengru was abandoned at birth and was taken in by a childless couple in Luohe City, in the central Chinese province of Zhenzhou.
Within months, her stomach began to swell and superstitious neighbours began calling the little girl a 'monster' and gossiping that she was pregnant.
Medical scans revealed Kang was actually carrying the parasitic foetus of her unborn twin in her belly.

A doctor told Kang’s worried foster parents: ‘She will die unless she has the surgery immediately.’
After 10 hours of complex surgery to remove the foetus, Kang's family have been told she can return home at the end of the month having made a full recovery.
Chief surgeon Dr Zhang Xuedong told The Sun: 'She will be able to go home at the end of the month, with her mother Wang Guihua and father Kuang Xiqing.

'There was a very real risk of cardiac arrest. The pressure within the child's chest and belly was very great but now she is out of danger.'
But Kang’s foster family had to rely on donations to be made to a fund set up by local government in order to pay for the surgerty.Source said such cases "foetus in foetus” is very rare and can be found one in every 500,000 pregnancies.

Study finds US cigs highest in chemicals

Recent US researchers report says that Americans inhale more cancer-causing agents with their cigarettes, while smokers in Canada, Britain and Australia get less.

Their study also demonstrated that the amounts of these carcinogens in a smoker's cigarette butts directly correlated with tell-tale compounds in the smoker's urine.

The study, published in the June issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, could help researchers trying to trace the harmful effects of smoking.

"We know that cigarettes from around the world vary in their ingredients and the way they are produced," says Dr Jim Pirkle of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who heads a lab using a mass spectrometer to measure levels of chemicals in people's bodies.

"All of these cigarettes contain harmful levels of carcinogens, but these findings show that amounts of tobacco-specific nitrosamines differ from country to country, and US brands are the highest in the study," says Pirkle.

CDC's David Ashley and colleagues did in-depth tests using 126 smokers in the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia.

"Seventeen eligible cigarette brands (between three and five brands from each country) were selected on the basis of national sales and nicotine yield to identify popular brands with a range of ventilation," the researchers write. Ventilation is how much air is mixed in with the smoke from the cigarette as it is inhaled.

The volunteers had their saliva and urine tested and also turned over their used cigarette butts to the researchers.

Blend variation

These were all tested for nicotine and for the chemicals 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK for short) and the breakdown product of NNK in the body, called NNAL.

These cancer-causing agents are known as tobacco-specific nitrosamines or TSNAs.

"We have shown a direct association between the 24-hour mouth-level exposure of NNK resulting from cigarette smoking and the concentration of its primary metabolite, NNAL, in the urine of smokers," the researchers write.

"Internal dose concentrations of urinary NNAL are significantly lower in smokers in countries that have lower TSNA levels in cigarettes such as Canada and Australia in contrast to countries that have high levels of these carcinogens in cigarettes, such as the United States."

The popular US cigarette brands studied contained 'American blend' tobacco, known to contain higher TSNA levels than the "bright" tobacco used in the most popular Australian, Canadian, and British brands.

Australian and Canadian smokers got more nicotine than US and British smokers, but not of TSNAs.

The World Health Organization says 5 million people die each year from tobacco-related heart attacks, strokes and cancers. Another 430,000 adults die annually from breathing second-hand smoke.

Should ski helmets be compulsory?

The death of Natasha Richardson has sparked a debate about whether it should be mandatory for skiers and snowboarders to wear helmets.

There's been a sharp rise in the number of people wearing helmets after several high-profile ski accidents this winter and some compulsion has already come in.

However, the medical evidence is not conclusive and it's not thought any widespread compulsion is imminent in the Alps.

This winter Lower Austria made it compulsory for all children under 14 to wear a helmet after the death of a 41-year old woman who had a high-speed collision with the German politician, Dieter Althaus, in January. He was wearing a helmet and survived, while she had no head protection.

After the accident, helmet sales increased sharply in Austria and Germany and some shops ran out of stock. In the UK, retailer Snow and Rock reports a 15% growth in sales this winter.

Italy already makes it compulsory for children to wear a helmet and many ski schools across the Alps insist on it.

"Serious head injuries are thankfully comparatively rare in skiing but are a significant cause of death and severe long-term disability," says the consultant surgeon, Jonathan Bell.

"There is good evidence that even moderate head injuries can lead to some permanent disability.

"A helmet will protect against minor injury by absorbing some of the impact and spreading the load, thus possibly reducing the severity of injury."

This winter in Austria seven people have died as a result of collisions on the slopes. In total, 29 skiers and snowboarders have died in ski accidents this season.

So, how many people already wear a helmet?
